Hollowed and Hanging, 16x12 in., graphite
We were once hollow, gestures without motion, but when we are well we hold color with intention like feathers in our hands.

T.S. Eliot once wrote, “We are the hollow men/ We are the stuffed men…Shape without form, shade without colour,/ Paralyzed force, gesture without motion.” These lines reflect the felt experience of many of the patients with whom I sat during my internship at a local inpatient psychiatric unit. I created this piece as an exploration of their experience. The watercolor/modge-podge overlay (not pictured in the photo) is a reflection on my own experience of creating a safe space and holding hope for these courageous women.

(This piece was curated in Insight Out, Lesley University, Graduating Student Art Show, April 26-May 11, 2012)
