| Hollowed and Hanging, 16x12 in., graphite We were once hollow, gestures without motion, but when we are well we hold color with intention like feathers in our hands. |
T.S. Eliot once wrote, “We are the hollow men/ We are
the stuffed men…Shape without form, shade without colour,/ Paralyzed force, gesture without motion.” These lines reflect
the felt experience of many of the patients with whom I sat during my internship
at a local inpatient psychiatric unit. I created this piece as an exploration
of their experience. The watercolor/modge-podge overlay (not pictured in the photo) is a reflection on my own
experience of creating a safe space and holding hope for these courageous
women.
(This piece was curated in Insight Out, Lesley University, Graduating Student Art Show, April 26-May 11, 2012)
